Celebrating Saints' Days

Happy Feast of St. Augustine!

I don't know about you, but feast days were a big deal in my house. Each of us children was named after a different saint (St. Teresa of Avila, represent!) and on our Saint's Day Mum would make our favorite food for dinner and then everyone would sing "Happy Feast Day to You!" with a cake and candles after dinner. Some times we would get gifts too; I remember Mum bought me Interior Castle for my saint's day when I was 11 (of course I didn't end up reading it until many years later).

The whole thing was pretty fabulous and I felt so lucky to get two celebrations each year, instead of just the one birthday. Especially since I had to share my birthday with my twin sister, I loved having an additional special day all to myself. My saint's day was pretty much my favorite day of the year.

When I went away to college, Mum arranged to have a cookie cake delivered to my dorm on my saint's day, since I couldn't be home for the usual celebration. That caused quite a stir; even at a Catholic college like Notre Dame, saint's days aren't much celebrated, and a lot of the girls had never heard of such a thing before. But I was grateful that Mum thought of it and happy that the tradition continued even after I left home.

Last year, after I moved to DC, it occurred to me that it might be nice to send my sisters cards on their saint's days. That way I could help celebrate with them even though I lived far away. But I ran up against a brick wall - I couldn't find a company that sold "Happy Feast Day!" cards, search as hard as I might, and I lacked the artistic talent to make them myself.

Lucky for me, one of my dear friends from college, Emily, is much more creative and talented than I am. She has designed a few simple, pretty feast day cards and is offering them for sale in her Etsy shop. Aren't they the cutest things? I just love them and I thought maybe some of you girls might be interested in them too!

I'm excited to send cards to my siblings on their feast days this year... and perhaps I'll celebrate my own feast day this year with a little party, or at least a nice dinner with my fiance! I'm already looking forward to it! How do you celebrate your feast day? Does your family have any special traditions?

  1. We usually go to mass on Saints days and have desert (which we only have on Saturdays and Sundays). We celebrate our baptism days more with a nice meal and a cake to celebrate our adoption into God's family.

  2. We usually celebrate our saints days just as we do bdays, only with less presents. ;) when my dad grew up he celebrated his saints day much more than his birthday, so we have always tried to go to mass on those days. and there is always a cake, songs and presents! my feast day is on july 26 (st. ann) so it is in vacation time, which means i always have tíme to go to mass!
