I could see her from my seat in the choir. She sat stiffly in the front pew, neck brace restricting any movement. Her face was taut with pain from recent back surgeries and complications, but her eyes were focused on the altar as she sang and prayed and participated in the Mass. Amidst the pain, there was an unmistakable aura of joy and trust.
It was beautiful.
There’s something about that front pew that inspires me. Every church has one—the pew reserved for those with special needs.
Those who don’t see well.
Those who don’t walk well.
Those who are in the process of healing from surgery or illness.
They sit in that front pew and unknowingly inspire me with their focus and attentiveness. But especially with their joy. Their physical handicaps don’t hold them back from coming to worship and to receive Jesus. Their suffering doesn’t keep them from smiling. Maybe because they know the One who gives meaning to it, the One who first picked up a cross and then told us to do the same and follow Him.
The more I think about it, perhaps we all belong in that front pew.
Because sometimes we don’t see well. We’re blinded by our sin and selfishness, or by fear and doubt.
Sometimes we don’t walk well. We trip and stumble and we take wrong paths.
Sometimes we’re in the process of healing. From bad choices. Messy relationships. Tragedy that takes your breath away.
Yet no matter what handicaps we have—physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual—we can still choose to look beyond them and focus on Him. We can find joy in the midst of pain because He shows us that our pain does not have to be purposeless.
Those beautiful people in the front row pew.
Lord Jesus, please bless them for teaching me to let nothing hold me back from coming to You.
What a beautiful thought!
ReplyDeleteWhen I sit in the front row pew, it's generally because the church is so full that there's nowhere else to sit. And when I do sit there, I always concentrate more fully on the mass. Maybe it's to stop me from being so aware that everyone behind can watch me, I don't know. But yes, the front pew is a very special place.
Love this.
